Building Regulations

The Building Regulations set standards for the design and construction of buildings primarily to ensure the safety and health for people in or around those buildings, but also for energy conservation and access to and about buildings.

Different sets of regulations apply in England / Wales and Scotland, however in general the regulations apply to most new buildings and many alterations of existing building whether domestic, commercial or industrial.

Building Regulations Promote:

  • Standards for most aspects of a building's construction, including its structure, fire safety, sound insulation, drainage, ventilation and electrical safety.
  • Energy efficiency in buildings. The changes to the regulations on energy conservation proposed on 13th September 2005 will save a million tonnes of carbon per year by 2010 and help to combat climate change
  • The needs of all people including those with disabilities. They set standards for buildings to be accessible and hazard-free wherever possible.
