Basic Fabric Improvements
The notional building used to calculate the TER assumes u-values at the 2002 elemental level, i.e. walls at 0.35, glazing at 2.0, etc. Improving these by a modest amount, for example walls to 0.3, glazing to 1.8, floors to 0.2 and roofs to 0.14 provides an immediate saving in carbon emissions.
Compliance can in fact be demonstrated with fabric improvement measures alone, although this may not be the most cost effective route. With improvements in new insulation materials and glazing, Dimplex are already seeing buildings from mainstream builders with wall u-values specified as low as 0.27 - 0.25 and glazing as low as 1.5.
| Element | Original Building U-Values | Basic Improvement Package U-Values | Intermediate Improvement Package U-Values | Advanced Improvement Package U-Values |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall | 0.35 | 0.3 | 0.27 | 0.25 |
| Windows | 2.0 | 1.8 | 0.17 | 0.15 |
| Ground Floor | 0.25 | 0.22 | 0.20 | 0.19 |
| Roof | 0.16 | 0.15 | 0.14 | 0.11 |
| Kg CO2 saved | - | 2.74 | 4.26 | 6.17 |
| Block DER | 45.76 | 43.02 | 41.50 | 39.59 |
The chart above shows possible U value improvement packages to reduce the DER to 39.59, but is still insufficient to meet the required TER of 36.76 in our example building.
